Genius Food Blogger Recreates Bob Belcher’s Punny Burgers with THE BOB’S BURGER EXPERIMENT

Cole Bowden is an engineer, a food blogger, and a man whose tenacity makes me immeasurably jealous. For the past two years, Bowden has been creating his own recipes for the pun-tastic burgers on FOX’s razor sharp, so-good-it-hurts animated show, Bob’s Burgers on his blog, The Bob’s Burger Experiment. The premise is simple, but brilliant: he takes each episode’s “Burger of the Day” and whips up his own twist on Bob Belcher’s most beloved food. From “Cheesus Is Born” — a mustard-flavored beef patty smothered in sautéed mushrooms, tomatoes and garlic, “all topped with melted baby swiss and a drizzle of brown gravy” — to The “Human Polenta-Pede Burger” — a trio of sliders, including beef with tomatoes and mozzarella, portobello mushroom burger with a red wine reduction sauce, and a spicy spinach and artichoke dip, all served on three different polenta buns — no burger is too extreme for Bowden.

And now, unsurprisingly, Bowden is coming out with a Bob’s Burgers cookbook!

NPR has a wonderful interview with Bowden, who apparently wasn’t such a whiz in the kitchen back in college. “I mean, I knew my way around a frying pan,” he says, “but pretty much just how to put things into it and heat it up.” And as further testament to Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard’s interaction with fans, Bouchard is not only aware of Bowden’s experiment, he’s a major fan. “I loved [the blog] ever since I heard of it, which was at its inception several years ago,” Bouchard told The Salt, NPR’s own food blog. “It was maybe the best example of how doing a show in the age of the Internet can be such a satisfying experience.”

The entire interview is well worth a read, so make sure you check it — and Bowden’s recipes — out while you wait for the cookbook to be released. Oh, and we’ve gathered a few of Bowden’s choice creations in a handy gallery, so you can drool at your keyboard and perhaps find your own punny inspiration.

Are you more of a “Sound and the Curry” or a “Blondes Have More Fun-Gus Burger”? Let us know in the comments below, share your own burger experiments with us on Instagram and Twitter, and don’t forget to invite me over if you need a taste tester. I’m selfless like that.
