Geek Track of the Day: Son Lux Rotoscope Thread and Pins for “Change is Everything”

“Change is Everything”, the stuttering and pounding, operatic new track from New York-based Son Lux, was an impressive enough piece of music before it had a visual component. But now that it does, boy are we impressed.

The newly released music video, directed by Nathan Johnson of The Made Shop, is a stop-motion animation composed of roughly 4,000 frames, with each image constructed through the adept and torturous placement of 200 push-pins and 500 feet of rubberized thread over a rotoscoped projection. Confused by that description? Give it a watch above and be floored by the result. In the geometric tautness of a connect-the-dots drawing, the thread takes form when strung around the pins, themselves crawling around the tack-board like ants, leaving a trail of pockmarks behind them.

To our great amusement, Johnson also documented his and his wife’s tiresome process of creating the music video, compiling their odyssey in a brief “making of” video, which you can watch below. After witnessing the many unexpected challenges and dangers faced on the path to finishing this project — from finger sores to projectile pins — we waiver between wishing to applaud Johnson’s work or pity his self-imposed, stop-motion hell.

Son Lux, the post-rock project from a contributor to Looper soundtrack, Ryan Lott, and now featuring guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and Ian Chang on drums, will be following up their 2013 record, Lanterns, and 2014’s EP, Alternate Worlds, with a new album. Bones, which will include the first single, “Change Is Everything”, is due out through Glassnote Records on June 23.
