Geek & Sundry’s CRAFT LAB Makes Smaug from Plastic Utensils

Are you ready to see the everyday objects around you in a different light? Then Geek & Sundry’s new series Craft Lab is for you. Every week Hollywood production designer Greg Aronowitz works with host Anna Akana to build creations from pop culture out of unusual supplies. This means they’re not running off to the craft store to purchase whatever they need, and that unconventional twist makes it fun to watch. Aronowitz and Akana have two wheels to select the project at random; one wheel has objects like the TARDIS and the Batmobile and the other one has supplies like cake and trash. The first episode’s wheel guided them to Smaug from The Hobbit made from plastic utensils.

I know what you’re thinking. How can one possibly construct the terrible and magnificent Smaug (and for the record, it’s pronounced “Sm-ow-g,” not “smog”) from plasticware? Aronowitz shows us how it’s done in the video above.

I’m impressed by the resourcefulness, the design, and by the fact that it looks so freaking good. Who knew plastic spoons could be used to make excellent dragon scales? And I’m glad they’re not limiting themselves to only using the material on the wheel. The base made from drain pipe, armature wire, and foil made a big difference. The finished Smaug bust would be perfect for a Hobbit-themed party. And you could use the same process to make Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons from Game of Thrones!

New episodes of Craft Lab will drop on Geek & Sundry every Tuesday.

Head to the comments and let us know what you think of plastic utensil Smaug.
