As snowfall fills the streets of our favorite east coast cities and Super Bowl weekend draws closer, the video game developments just won’t stop coming in. No complaints from me–I was getting worried after we started the year off particularly slow. But since Nintendo’s big unveilings a couple weeks back, the industry has finally began to regain its proper momentum. In this evening’s edition of Gaming Daily, Ken Levine unveils some details about his next project, Turtle Rock Studios shares what they learned during the Evolve beta, and Square Enix will allegedly unveil a new PS4 title this weekend.
Ken Levine gets back to making magic.
It’s been a little under a year since Ken Levine announced that Irrational Games would be down-sizing and operating with more of an indie studio mindset. And ever since that fateful day, diehard fans of the Bioshock series and fans of Levine alike have been waiting to hear about his next move. Thanks to twitter and Levine’s often entertaining outspokenness, we’ve got a small taste of what to expect next:
RT @braxton_wheeler: @IGLevine what is the game about? will it be first person or third? -Current thinking is first.

@SGuergachi Doing it in parallel. Should have a prototype in next few months.
â Ken Levine (@IGLevine) January 27, 2015
@SGuergachi –The scope will be large-ish, but heavily reliant on re-useable “lego” narrative and game systems, which are re-combineable

According to tweets by Señor Levine, he’s heavily eye-balling a first-person format for his next game. I’m cool with this—might as well stick with what you know, right? He also described the plot as “sci-fi-ish,” claimed the scope of the game would be “large-ish,” would take place in a new universe, and stated that a prototype of the game’s parallel build should be done in the next few months. The secret game project is set to be published by Take-Two Interactive whenever it is released, which I assume is far off considering that Levine stated we would not being seeing any of the game at this year’s E3.
Mr. Levine has always been one of the more vocal game makers in the industry, and it should come as no surprise that he is so craftily pulling the curtain back on his new project, giving away details slowly and steadily as the project begins development. There is one thing we can definitely rest assured on, however: the game will not be another Bioshock title. Eyes on 2K Games if you’re looking for the next installment of that series.

Square Enix to reveal new PS4 title this weekend.
Ken Levine isn’t the only one being all mysterious on the internet as of late. Square Enix has been teasing something by the name of CODE Z all day, leaving many to wonder what else the Final Fantasy could have under their sleeves outside of their flagship franchises. The tease happened in a series of tweets, each saying the same thing in different languages:
It was cold outside and so was my mind…

We were well aware of the imminent School of Ragnarok reveal that Square was planning on dropping, but the plot has thickened, and this Code Z business has potential to be pretty big. Especially when considering that it will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive, which was revealed via the game’s teaser site. Be sure to keeps your eyes here at Nerdist HQ when the news officially drops over the weekend.

Evolve beta test reveals interesting statistics.
The Evolve beta test appeared to have worked wonders for the boys and girls of Turtle Rock Studios, who released an article today discussing the knowledge they obtained during this month’s beta window. According to Turtle Rockâs Chris Ashton, the beta disclosed several things worthy of tweaking, the main thing being Wraith’s abilitiesâ which were definitely on the overpowered side of things. They also released a super cool infographic showing off interesting numbers in regards to player activity. Check out the long information bit right below:
Looks like things are pretty balanced to me. Now it’s just a matter of cleaning up the third monster a little bit, and we’ll be all set for Evolve when it launches on February 10. Hunters beware, my Kraken will most certainly be on a tear.
