GAME OF THRONES Theme Played on Wine Glasses

When Game of Thrones has reached its final scene and we no longer use the word “Dracarys” every day, it will still linger. The characters and their stories are memorable, as are the wacky magic and giant dragons. There’s something else we’ll remember for years to come though: the opening theme song. Composer Ramin Djawadi crafted a beautiful piece of music for the series. It has inspired parodies and covers, and musician Dan Newbie has broken the notes down with with wine glasses. Given the amount of drinking that happens on the show, it’s rather appropriate, no?

He doesn’t just use glasses. He adds a variety of other household objects on separate tracks to blend the tune and add depth. Newbie wields pencils, a plastic water jug, a rolling pin, frying pan, spatulas, and more. Yeah, this rendition is making me see my kitchen utensils in a new light.

Besides the presence of wine glasses, this take on the theme fits with the show because it seems like the type of entertainment that could happen at the next royal wedding. There are always royal weddings in Westeros, and it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that there’s a whole guild of wine glass playing musicians in King’s Landing.

Newbie’s musical set up could also be altered to become a drinking game, too. Arrange the glasses before the show, try to play along with the theme, and if you fail, drink the contents of all the glasses. Hmm, maybe I shouldn’t be in charge of creating drinking games lest my guests end up like Robert Baratheon on a boar hunt.
