For all that we obsessively know about Game of Thrones, the beauty of the predicament we find ourselves in nowâhaving surpassed the books, entering uncharted territory on George R.R. Martin‘s storyâis that anything is possible, and our knowledge from the text of the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series will only take us so far. So, naturally: we have some questions about what we’re seeing in this new trailer.
For reference, here it is again:
And now, since we like to keep it simpleâour questions! In chronological order, natch:
0:04 – OK Sansa, where are ya walkin’ to?
0:11 – Oh no, is Littlefinger in your head again? GIRL.
0:23 – Jon Snow WHY are you heading North of The Wall?
0:26 – Is that Casterly Rock? Or are there really THAT many crazy sides to Kings Landing?
0:27 – Cersei, girl, what are you thinking?
0:34 – Do we think Arya’s made it to Winterfell?
0:35 – It doesn’t look snowy enough, does it?
0:35 – Oh MAN–could Arya meet Dany before Jon Snow even?
0:38 – Is THIS the moment Jaime goes to murder Cersei?
0:39 – Littlefinger, why are you so creepy/basically a parody of yourself at this point?
0:40 – Hasn’t anyone ever told you shadow-stalking is looked down upon?
0:41 – WHOSE SWORD IS THAT?
0:42 – Do we think Dany likes being back home at Dragonstone?
0:43 – Oh man, WAIT! Do you think we’ll get any BABY DANY FLASHBACKS?
0:44 – “For centuries, our families fought together” – Jon Snow is saying this, seemingly to a Northerner… BUT WHAT IF IT’S ACTUALLY TO DANY?
0:51 – How much meat do you think those dragons needed to eat in order to get that big?
0:53 – What’re you lookin’ at, Tyrion? Is it the Seven Kingdoms? (I bet it’s the Seven Kingdoms in the distance and he’s thinking about how he may have to murder his siblings and he’s feeling real conflicted and sad about it. Not that I’m projecting.)
0:56 – Anyone else forget that Reek/Theon was still a player in this whole thing because his sister is so much better?
0:57 – Grey Worm’s new faceguard is pretty chill, eh?
0:59 – Anyone else CHEER AGGRESSIVELY when they saw Podrick and Brienne come on screen?
1:00 – WHY IS THE HOUND IN THE NORTH?
1:00 – WAS THAT GREY WORM FALLING AND DYING?
1:01 – ARE THOSE THE DOTHRAKI FIGHTING THE LANNISTERS?
1:01 – We’re TOTALLY going to Casterly Rock and aren’t you just so EXCITED?
1:01 – How in the heck did uncle Euron get enough ships made/together to attack the Greyjoy fleet this fast?
1:02 – Anyone else DEEPLY WORRIED about Bronn here?
1:02 – WHERE ARE THOSE CRAZY RAVENS GOING?
1:03 – OH MY GOD, WHO WARGED INTO THAT RAVEN JUST THEN?! DID YOU SEE THAT?!
1:03 – It HAS to be Bran, right?
1:03 – Unless it was a wildling?!
1:03 – Is that an army of wildlings below them?!
1:04 – The NIGHT KING TOTALLY SEES THAT WARGRAVEN, HUH?
1:04 – When did Bran get a wheelchair and from whence?
1:04 – WHO IS THAT OLD MAN HE’S TALKING TO? WHO IS IT?
1:06 – SURPRISE BERIC DONDARRION FIRE SWORD?!
1:07 – Anyone else kinda/sorta not care about the Greyjoy family in-fighting?
1:09 – Do we think Euron will try to marry Dany, or murder her, or both?
1:10 – That Unsullied fight is definitely happening in Casterly Rock, right?
1:12 – Seriously, is this the biggest fight Game of Thrones is going to have?
1:13 – HOLY CRAP IS THAT SER JORAH OF HOUSE FRIENDZONE RUNNING THROUGH THE WRECKAGE?
1:14 – Oh wait, no, it’s definitely Jaime, huh? (sigh.)
1:15 – How much money did HBO spend on exploding boats this year and was it more or less than the Battle of Blackwater?
1:15 – Everyone’s cheering for Tormund Giantsbane, right?
1:16 – Is THIS the most epic battle shot this show has ever seen?
1:17 – Is this the moment the Greyjoys die and why am I so convinced they’re donezo this season?
1:19 – Seriously, though–does the show have a vendetta against boats this season?
1:20 – Ahhhhhhh! How E-P-I-C is that shot of Jon Snow?!
1:21 – Oh snap–are we going to get the first ever eunuch sex scene on TV?
1:22 – Why are the only shots we’re getting of Tyrion showing him deeply worried on grass?
1:22 – THAT IS TOTALLY THE HOUND AGAIN BUT IN THE SOUTH RIGHT?
1:22 – Does this mean CLEGANEBOWL?
1:23 – Can someone tell Dan Casey that Ser Davos is actually in this trailer because he totally thought he was not?
1:23 – Which White Walker is this that Jon Snow’s fighting, why does he look so similar to the one he killed at Hardhome and and how do they decide on ranking of White Walker Warriors?
1:24 – There’s 100% going to be another badass scene of Dany walking out of the fire this season, isn’t there?
1:24 – Is that Theon?
1:25 – How quickly will crazy Euron Greyjoy die this season you think?
1:26 – DROGOOOOOON! (This isn’t a question so much as it is a bit of hype)
1:27 – Do dragons have dentists?
1:32 – How fucked is Jon Snow?
1:34 – Is Jon Snow hurt or dead here? Because that’s totally Jon Snow hunched atop that horse, right?
1:39 – “The lone wolf dies but the pack lives on” – Does Sansa not see how that could spell danger for her since even though Jon Snow is not a wolf he’s a part of their pack?
1:42 – Oh man how badass and hunky/dreamy is Jon Snow the angry warrior going to be this season you think?
2:08 – BUT WHERE THE FUCK IS GENDRY?
Now, all jokes aside (because there were a few up there), the biggest questions seem to be:
Who will band together with Jon Snow to defeat the White Walkers and Night King, and how many people are going to die before we get there?
With Littlefinger chirping in Sansa’s ear and the White Walkers battering down upon The Wall, Jon Snow is getting it on all sides, and in an incredibly precarious position heading into the real war people need to be worried about.
Dany is the most obvious ally, being his cousin and understanding that magic is real and always has been. But she’s also very far south and, as we’ve seen here, Jon Snow spends a lot of this season deep in the North. So how would such a pairing come together? And how do the less-major-player folks like Arya and the Sand Snakes and the Greyjoys play into that? It seems fair to assume that there will be a brokering of a pact and Tyrion will lead that charge, but at what cost? Certainly his family and their livelihood feels like the biggest stake and most obvious play here.
But it’s also important to point out what the show IS NOT showing us: folks like Samwell Tarly at the Citadel and Ser Jorah who’s off looking for a cure for Greyscale in the ruins of Valyria (presumably). When it comes to the “real enemy” on Game of Thrones, GRRM loves to throw up red herrings this way and that. By eschewing those who are looking at the mysteries of the Realm in a more specific wayâthrough studying to become an Archmaester, the holder of all the Realm’s secrets or trying to find a cure to a disease that turns men to living stoneâthe biggest bombshells may come from the most unexpected of places. So keep your third crow’s eye on all the things the trailer leaves in the dark. Because there’s no doubt that history becoming parable becoming story, like the wheel of chaos that rules over the Realm, also works on this larger scale.
But what questions do you have for the trailer? Let us know in the comments below!
