GAME OF HYRULE Gives Zelda a Westerosi Makeover

Middle-earth is one thing–yeah, we get it, it’s great–but for a whole generation of kids, Hyrule is the only mythical, high-fantasy kingdom anyone could ever want to visit. Full of fairies, trolls, pig-faced evil guys, and elven heroes, the ever-changing land of the Legend of Zelda games is exactly where we’d go on holiday. And for nearly as long, people have been wanting to see the adventures of Link on television or in film, but with the exception of a pretty lousy cartoon series in the late-’80s (“Excuuuuuuse me, Princess!”), we’ve yet to to see any of it come to fruition. But maybe thanks to HBO’s Game of Thrones, we can have such a thing now.

The folks over at MegaSteakMan gave us a version of the Game of Thrones opening credits sequence using a Hyrule map last year, and this year they’ve returned with a full episode–sort of–of Game of Hyrule, mixing all the intrigue and weirdness you remember from the games in a distinctly not-for-kids iteration. (Yes, there’s a Zelda and Link sex scene.)

There are plenty of nods to the games’ quirks, including Link never uttering a word and the Old Man telling us to “Press A if you want me to repeat that.” You also get an execution scene in which presumed vandals (who are in trouble for breaking pottery and chopping down hedges) are pecked to death by cuccos after the executioner keeps hitting one over and over. And Ganondorf is there to be the Littlefinger of Hyrule, as though it needed one.

Great CGI creatures like the spiders with faces and on-point silliness make Game of Hyrule the extra heart we were looking for. Let us know your favorite part of the short below!

Look here for our wild theory about what became of Jon Snow!
