GAMBIT Changes Direction in Response to DEADPOOL and LOGAN

20th Century Fox‘s Gambit film has long been in development hell, with little certain other than that Channing Tatum will star as the titular X-Man. The film has gone through multiple directors and several scripts, but in an interview with Yahoo, Tatum hinted that the movie will be going in a different direction.

Channing-Tatum-Hail-Caesar

“We got really lucky. We had a first draft; it was good,” he told Yahoo, “but we were coming to it at a time at that creative phase of [the X-Men], where these movies went through a bit of a paradigm shift, where the X-Men movies and the superhero movies with Logan and Deadpool really broke down a lot of doors for us. We were trying to do some things that we actually weren’t allowed to do, and they just smashed down the doors, so we’re giving it a bit of a rethink.”

However, Tatum was reticent to slap the R-rating on the film since he wants kids to be able to enjoy the character as much as he did when he was little.

If true, it’s a good move for Fox, especially since it was becoming likely that we’d never see Gambit in his own solo outing. The success of Deadpool and Logan proved that superhero movies don’t need to be intrinsically connected to a wider universe (though both films had minor connections) and can carve their own paths, tonally. Pick a tone that befits the character, and the audience will follow.
