From SUPERMAN RETURNS to ARROW – Brandon Routh Cast as the Atom! [UPDATE]

[Update: and Devon Aoki makes the leap from Sin City to Arrow as Katana]

Season three of Arrow is just going to be packed with comic movie alumni. The Wrap brought news that Sin City actress Devon Aoki would be joining the CW series as Katana AKA Tatsu Yamashiro in a recurring role in the series’ third season.

Katana is a martial arts expert who wields the “Soultaker” sword and was featured in the animated Beware the Batman as protege to both the series hero and Alfred.

Original story:

According to TV Line, we’ll be seeing Brandon Routh back in the live-action DC Universe again.

The site is reporting that the Superman Returns star will be joining the third season of CW’s Arrow as Ray Palmer AKA the incredible shrinking superhero The Atom. Palmer will be taking control as the new owner of Queen Consolidated and he’ll be up to some (seemingly) shady goings-on with the company’s Applied Science Division.

That’s… actually kind of a cool way of introducing the character to the show. “Genius scientist and businessman uses his new company to develop superhero tech” is better than any kind of random adventure that might see a guy who’s really good at shrinking and fighting sub-atomic enemies.

Whatever its flaws, Routh was the best part of Superman Returns, but he hasn’t quite found a breakout role in the shadow of Kal-El. He had a great part as one of the evil exes in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and a very funny cameo in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. He also dipped his toe into weekly nerd-obsession television with a run as a villain on Chuck.

That will be the one question mark for the series: how deep into the weird and wild atomic territory does CW plan to get with Dr. Palmer’s adventures? The hero has done everything from punch bad guys in the eardrum to going on high fantasy adventures in miniature in Sword of the Atom. Frankly, the weirder, the better.

  1. Brandon was a better superman in my opinion as well, its not his fault the script suck rocks lol bit he carried the movie hopefully this will resurrect his career

  2. Cameron says:

So, to keep it set in a more realistic world, I guess he will be using nanobots instead of shrinking himself physically?

  3. Jim says:

I’m good with this decision, and I’m very happy for Routh…who in my honest opinion was still a better Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman than Henry Cavill.

  4. DarthJay says:

I like Brandon Routh…I thought he was an awesome good guy in Superman and an awesome bad guy in his role in Chuck, so I’ll be interested to see how he does in this role. Arrow has done no wrong so far in my book, so it looks like it will just keep getting better.
