Freddie Wong’s RocketJump to Produce New Series for Hulu

One of the most game-changing series of the last few years (pun intend) has been the RocketJump-produced YouTube series Video Game High School. Though it started as a simple web series, abiding by the rules of 5 minute videos coming out on a weekly basis, Freddie Wong and the rest of the crew quickly abandoned their original model in favor of a new one that attempted to prove a broadcast-length series (6 episodes a week at 22-plus minutes each) could be independently produced and distributed. Well, unsurprisingly, with the help of a global fanbase, the gang succeeded so well that ads for the series began appearing on traditional media outlets, including during the commercial breaks of The Walking Dead.

Now with VGHS concluded, all are eyes are looking toward what’s coming next from the new media company (a.k.a. our former officemates). At first, we heard word of a project titled Dimension 404, but now a new press release has confirmed what the next RocketJump-produced digital series is going to be.

In a new announcement from Hulu, it has been revealed RocketJump and Lionsgate will be joining forces for their first ever joint series under their new deal – a scripted-reality series ordered for an eight episode first season. The new, currently untitled series will chronicle the production of one of the team’s shorts in each new episode, and it will then be released exclusively on Hulu.

While not a scripted program per se, this new series could lay the ground work for RocketJump to gain the resources it needs to take their production the next level. If it’s a hit, it’s going to be hard to imagine Hulu not champing at the bit for whatever the team produces next in the scripted realm  Dimension 404, perhaps?

I hope it lives up to VGHS. I really hate that they aren’t continuing that.
