Fox has aired both The Simpsons and Family Guy together for over a decade as two of Fox’s longest running, most popular animated shows ever. Yet, the two have never joined up for a crossover episode. In fact, an actual Simpsons/Family Guy crossover episode, as an idea, has been, at best, an off-hand joke referencing how unlikely something is. Objectively, this seems even more unlikely as there are plenty of similarities between both shows, and The Simpsons have been the lead-in for Family Guy ever since Family Guy‘s premiere after the 1999 Super Bowl. Subjectively, many fans keep their love of both mutually exclusive.
Yet, Fox’s Kevin Reilly just announced at Fox’s Upfront presentation that, in September of this year, an hour long episode entitled “Simpsons Guy“ will air.
Since The Simpsons and Family Guy currently air back-to-back on Sundays, the hour long special episode will serve as the entire crossover episode. Most TV series crossovers involved two episodes being traded by having one show’s cast on the other’s show and vice versa. The closest thing to a crossover between The Simpsons and Family Guy up until now didn’t involve the participation of either show. Comedy Central’s South Park did a brilliant send-up of Family Guy in two episodes entitled “Cartoon Wars”, the second part of which featured a character resembling Bart Simpson back in 2006.
