First Teaser for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION

With all the rampant sequelizing and franchising of film properties out there, I feel like a lot of people forget about the trusty Mission: Impossible film series until a new one comes out. “Oh yeah, these movies!” they’ll seem to say. The spying flicks have been star-producer Tom Cruise’s pet project since forever and now he and his character Ethan Hunt are back for the fifth such impossible mission, subtitled Rogue Nation. Like Ghost Protocol, I hope this one is accompanied by a particular thing that the subtitle can become the verb of. (What was that sentence?) By that I mean going “Ghost Protocol” was when you wear your hood up; perhaps going “Rogue Nation” can mean hanging out of an airplane? Let’s hope it doesn’t; Do not go Rogue Nation.

Like all the films in the series, this one has a new director–Cruise’s friend and collaborator Christopher McQuarrie–and with him a new mentality. Cruise has worked with McQuarrie on a couple movies that I think are great but didn’t make enough money, the first being Jack Reacher, the second being Edge of Tomorrow which McQuarrie wrote the script for and Doug Liman directed. I’m looking forward to seeing this team get brought to the series that has already had films from Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, and Brad Bird.

And, this entry is bringing back fan favorite characters, chiefly the nerd-turned-suave-agent Benji played by Geek Hero Simon Pegg, along with Ghost Protocol‘s Jeremy Renner and every entry’s Ving Rhames as right-hand-man Luther Stickell. The movie hits IMAX and regular-ass screens on July 31st. Below you’ll find the official synopses and teaser poster. Then below those, tell us what you think in the comments!

Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate – an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF.
