First Photo of Grant Gustin’s THE FLASH Costume

The Fastest Man on Earth stood still just long enough for us to get our first glimpse. Late last year, Grant Gustin did a two-episode guest star spot on CW’s brilliant Arrow playing Central City’s perpetually-late CSI Barry Allen. At the end of that arc, a freak lightning storm and an experiment at S.T.A.R. Labs resulted in Allen having some kind of explosion, leaving him with red electricity throughout his body.

This, of course, was the backdoor pilot for the network’s next DC Comics program, The Flash. Today, an image was released showing Gustin in the new Flash headpiece, presumably made of the same material he used to make Oliver Queen’s new mask. We don’t get to see the whole thing yet, but so far it looks like it’s keeping the essence of the traditional Silver Age Flash suit while updating it a bit, away from spandex and into leather, the fabric of choice for superheroes.

According to the press release: “The costume for The Flash was designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who also designed the costume for Arrow and whose motion picture credits include Academy Awards for her work on Alice in Wonderland, Memoirs of a Geisha and Chicago, as well as seven additional Oscar nominations for films such as Snow White and the Huntsman, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Sleepy Hollow, among others.”

Production for The Flash begins next week on a pilot script by exec producers Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti, and DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns and will be directed by co-exec producer David Nutter, all of whom made Arrow what it is today.

Costume looks good, no? Think The Flash will live up to Arrow‘s awesomeness. Talk about it in the comments.

I’m not a fan of Arrow, but I’m really looking forward to this.

  2. IBX Improv says:

Oh wow! The suit looks great. Cannot wait for the movie!

  3. Vandeawesome says:

Awesome! Can’t wait! I really liked his character on Arrow. It may have clashed with current DC Flash’s behaviours but overall I really liked this down to earth young version of Barry Allen.
Thanks Nerdist you’ve become my first source for entertainment news!

  4. Tiffany says:

Anything is better than Ben Affleck as Batman!

  5. Thefilthelement says:

They should have just brought the first series’ costume out of retirement

  6. nate says:

They’re going to have to include the CW stuff. There’s already far too many references to Batman in there for it not to happen.

  7. Mark S says:

Mostly I’m just hoping for less melodramatic CW-style romangst.

  8. shawn says:

I do not for see them making the CW universe the same as the Man of Steel universe.

  9. Jesse Alexander says:

Very proud to say that it looks great! I think they picked an awesome collection of talent. Grant is a wonderful Barry. And to top it off I was wondering if you are gonna get both Grant and Stephen Amell on the podcast? Also, is anyone else wondering if we may get to see both the Flash and Green Arrow will make cameo appearances in the new Superman vs. Batman as we prepare for the arrival of a Justice League movie franchise

  10. From just the head shot, I really like it. I like how they added in the chin strap to go with the current new 52 continuity. The darker color will make eventual team ups with Oliver look visually better. I can’t tell if the lightning bolts are connected to the mask or if they jut out a bit like the comic, which is what I prefer. I can’t wait for a full shot so we can do side-by-side comparisons with John Wesley Shipp’s costume.

Leather? They’re gonna hear his thighs squeaking from a mile away!
