Back in September, Marvel revealed plans to relaunch the X-Men â92 miniseries as an ongoing book featuring the very retro team of mutants from around the original X-Men animated series. To celebrate the X-Men â92 relaunch, 24 of Marvelâs monthly titles will feature “Marvel â92” variant covers that flashback to the classic status quo of several Marvel heroes.
So far, 21 of the 24 covers have been released, and the latest batch of covers doesnât strictly stick with the â90s timeframe. On J. Scott Campbellâs Marvel â92 variant for Ms. Marvel #2, Carol Danvers is wearing her costume from the early 2000s, before she was headlining a solo book again. However, it doesnât get more â90s than Mark Bagleyâs Web Warriors #2 cover, which revisits the Spider-Man Clone Saga with two Spider-Men (including the Scarlet Spider), Kaine, Jackyl, Mary Jane, and Gwen Stacyâs clone.
Bagley also provided the cover for Silkâs Marvel â92 variant, which features the second Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter, a heroine who is currently the second Madame Web. Image Comics co-founder Whilce Portacio did two covers from the latest batch of Marvel â92 variants. On Uncanny Inhumans #3, Portacio depicts the Heroes Reborn incarnation of Iron Man, while the superhero team Force Works appears on Portacioâs cover for Uncanny Avengers #3.
Think of each cover as a window to the past. Scarlet Witchâs Marvel â92 variant by Tom Raney features the title character in her brief return to villainy from the early â90s. Meanwhile, the smart Hulk (a composite of Bruce Banner, the childlike green Hulk, and the cunning Grey Hulk) is drawn by Dale Keown on the cover of Totally Awesome Hulk # 3.
The Marvel â92 variant covers will be released in December. You can see all of the currently revealed covers in our gallery below!
