First Look at Cirque du Soleil’s Insane AVATAR Prequel Show

Even though it’s been six years since the blue people, sorry—Avatar, a.k.a. highest grossing film of all time—graced our cinema screens, there’s no escaping the world. As well as the upcoming sequel (the first of a new trilogy), and the recent Avatar theme park and comic book announcements, the legendary acrobatics troupe Cirque du Soleil have partnered with James Cameron to unveil an arena show inspired by Avatar called Toruk – the First Flight.

Did I mention there’s no escaping Avatar?

Depending on your fan status, you’ll be happy to know that Toruk is not a reenactment of the movie, instead taking place 3,000 years before the events of Avatar. As Toruk’s co-director Michael Lemieux told Entertainment Weekly, “there’s no humans, there’s no spaceships, there’s no battles. Toruk‘s story introduces a Pandora moon under a threat of volcanic eruption, and the ocean-to-mountain travels are entirely, well, organic.” So does that mean no animatronics? Apparently! According to the interview, Toruk will instead use puppets as the natural beasts of Pandora’s ecosystem, along with “narrative acrobatics” to drive the story.

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, you can marvel at some images of the show (more in the gallery below). There’s no denying that this thing would be fantastic to see on stage, whether or not you’re an Avatar enthusiast.

Toruk: The First Flight

Toruk – The First Flight will have a soft-opening on November 12 in Louisiana prior to its world premiere in Montreal on December 21. After that, it’ll launch a national tour in 2016. We’re sure you’ll be hearing more about it everywhere.
