First “Django Unchained” Teaser Trailer

This is a movie I’ve been looking forward to since I heard it was going to exist. After Inglourious Basterds, which I felt could not possibly have been a better representation of a Spaghetti Western, Quentin Tarantino has delivered an honest to God one, although, from this trailer, it appears like he’s changing things on us.

Though the trailer is full of James Brown music and the flash we’ve come to expect from QT, much of the cinematography looks to be evoking EVERY western, not just of the Spaghetti variety. These could be scenes out of the Coen Brothers’ True Grit or John Ford’s The Searchers, on top of being reminiscent of the work of Sergio Corbucci, who directed a number of great Italian Westerns, specifically the original Django. Great touch at the end of the trailer: The man at the bar who asks Jamie Foxx for his name is none other than Franco Nero, who played the title character in Corbucci’s original. Like Basterds, Tarantino appears to be using specific iconography to tell his story, and not just throwing genre tropes at the screen as in the Kill Bills and Death Proof.

I love the new direction he’s going, and hope he keeps casting Christoph Waltz in everything. I could not be more excited for this movie to come out.
