“Firefly Online” Coming For Mobile Devices

Firefly is coming back again. No, not as a show or movie, but in long-rumored, long-delayed game form, this one for mobile platforms from Fox Digital Entertainment, QMx, and Spark Plug Games. It’s a mobile MMO (they don’t call it an MMO, but, well, you know) scheduled for a 2014 release, and there’s no gameplay footage or anything that specific, but here’s what they say in the press release:

Firefly Online (FFO) is a multi-user, social online role-playing game that will initially be available for smartphones and tablets, including those based on iOS and Android operating systems. Players take on the role of a ship captain as they hire a crew and lead missions, while trading with and competing against millions of other players like themselves. Much like the crew of Serenity, the Firefly-class transport ship featured in the original show, players must do whatever it takes to survive in the Verse: find a crew, find a job and keep flying.

Firefly Online players will play a captain in the Verse that’s struggling to get by, just like Capt. Mal Reynolds from the show, and dive in the following features:

-Create a crew, customize a shiny ship and explore the Verse.
-Aim to misbehave in space and planet-side adventures.
-Pick-up and play anywhere with cross-platform, cross-device game play support.
-Engage with unique social features connecting Firefly fans.

So it’s not a triumphant return to the big screen, or the TV screen, for that matter, but it’s something. If you’re interested, you can get more information and pre-register for the game at keepflying.com, and they’re at Comic-Con at booth #3249.

Feels like Farmville on a ship. I sure hope that feeling is wrong.

Very interesting. Obviously I’m pre-registering, just to stay in the loop as this thing develops. But I’d feel a lot more positive if I saw signs that Joss Whedon was connected to this somehow (seeing the “Fox” name doesn’t exactly inspire hope). It’s described as an RPG, but it’ll be a lot more interesting if it has deep, rich story elements to explore, and for that they should be looking to the creator himself. If it turns out to basically just be a resource management game with experience tacked on to make it an RPG, it’ll be very disappointing. I’m willing to give it the chance to impress, though. Hopefully they’ll come up with something shiny.
