There were some mighty fine action movies last year â Captain America: The Winter Solder, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men: Days of Future Past â but none towered above the underdog film that was John Wick.
Initially written off as a Keanu Reeves vehicle that wouldnât amount to anything more than tears from dog owners, John Wick grabbed audiences by the throat and thrust beautifully choreographed gunplay moves at us without once letting go. By the filmâs end, all we wanted was to see more of Johnâs world, but more importantly, we wanted to see more of John. However, things have been rather quiet on the sequel front to, arguably, 2014âs most surprising successâ¦but that all changes today.
Filmmakers Chad Stahelski and David Leitch (Stahelski specifically) have stated the following regarding a sequel, âweâre in development right now.â But, even though the two just sent our imaginations through the roof, neither gave up any specifics regarding that statement. But, Stahelski did say, âWe have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. Itâs the matter of story and how much you like the character. Thatâs always the most important.â
Thatâs very true. Action movies are only as strong as the characters doing the action. In the first film, part of what we enjoyed so much was a desire to see John get closure for his newly deceased lover and the companion she left to him before passing. If a sequel can find a way to tap into those emotions again without lessening the impact of the original film, we most certainly say, bring it on. With a headshot double tap.
John Wick is now available on DVD and Blu Ray.

I was a bit baffled by this until I checked at Box Office Mojo and found that the production budget was a mere $20 million with a worldwide wide gross nearing $80 million. So I guess it made decent money. That budget just seems amazingly low for an action movie with that many recognizable names in the cast but Hollywood has made us accustomed to absurd production costs.
I loved John Wick as much as the next guy- but if a second is in development due to the fact that Hollywood noticed that people liked this “underdog” of a film, and now are just throwing money at a second, I’d hate to see what will come of the development process. Hollywood is notorious for shitty sequels just to make that extra buck.
“What? People liked this movie? Well damn- let’s make 20 more just like it! They’ll eat it up!”
Best Action film of last year. Great cinematography and choreography, Keanu never looked better!
I absolutely LOVED John Wick, and would love to see this character come back for a second round, IF they can have it fit into a way where it doesn’t feel like an action movie just for the sake of an action movie.
The first one worked because you feel for him as a human being despite the fact that he is a heartless killing monster. Now that he’s gotten his revenge and can hopefully find peace, it’s going to take a good story to convince me that he’s going to keep coming back just for the sake of coming back.
If it can’t build up the story don’t don’t don’t *&&^ it up!
