Well here’s an exciting thing: the newest game in the Fatal Frame series from Koei Tecmo Games—Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water—will be released digitally on the Wii U on October 22nd. At the time of this news’ release, Nintendo also announced the game will come with a “free-to-start” trial option in which players can download and play the prologue and the first two chapters of the game for free. If players then choose to play the rest of the game, it will cost $49.99 in the Nintendo eShop or through an in-game menu for Fatal Frame.

The Fatal Frame series has existed for about fourteen years now, and Maiden of Black Water marks the fifth title in the series’ main set of games. Each game has been based around the core concept of exploring an area that is plagued by supernatural occurrences and the appearance of ghosts, using an occultist device called the Camera Obscura in order to capture the spirits that try to attack you. The Camera Obscura is not just a point and shoot weapon though, it includes its own mini-game battle system of capturing better photos to do damage to spirits while not waisting film. Players who have good reaction time can initiate a Shutter Chain in which they can use Fatal Frames to deal massive damage to an enemy.

Moving the series over to Wii U offers a chance to utilize the Gamepad for play—which it uses for the Camera Obscura battle system in order to better utilize the system’s two screen style. The games have always scored fairly well in reviews and are still quite popular in Japan. So, October well tell if this “free-to-start” concept can get more Western gamers hooked into the ghostly fun of the new Fatal Frame.
