Coming out of his starring role on the second season of HBOâs True Detective, Colin Farrell has signed on to appear in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The movie is based on the world of Harry Potter as created by J. K. Rowling, but it takes place 70 years before the first Harry Potter novel.
Farrell will play a wizard named Graves, who will encounter the main character, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) in New York. The film revolves around Newt as he explores the secret world of wizards and magic and seeks out the incredible creatures that inhabit it for his book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The book was mentioned several times in the Harry Potter novels as a required text for Harryâs class. In 2001, Rowling released a version of the book written in character.
Prior to True Detective, Farrell appeared in several movies including the remakes of Total Recall and Fright Night, as well as Daredevil, S.W.A.T., Minority Report, and Winterâs Tale.
Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, and Alison Sudol have also been cast in Fantastic Beasts, which will be adapted by Harry Potter film veterans David Yates as the director and Steve Kloves as the screenwriter.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released on November 18, 2016.
