While summer is usually “blockbuster season,” in comic book stores as well as movie theaters, that might be changing, as this fall several companies are releasing several high profile titles competing for your hard earned bucks. Here are eight of the most eagerly anticipated comics from various publishers all set to debut this fall.

  Earth 2: World’s End (October, DC Comics)

DC has been making quite a bit of noise with their weekly series this past year, first with Batman Eternal and later with New 52: Future’s End. Coming this October is their third weekly series, Earth 2: World’s End. Written by Daniel H. Wilson, Marguerite Bennett, and Mike Johnson, with art by Adrian Syaf, Jorge Jimenez, Eddy Barrows, and Paulo Siquiera. In this new series, the Huntress and Power Girl return to their home universe to help save it from the forces of Apokolips. Along the way, we’ll learn the very different history of their Earth from the main DCU Earth (Earth 0? Earth 1?) It’s rumored that this weekly series (along with Future’s End) will tie into a new Crisis event in 2015, so hardcore DC fans might wanna to pay extra attention to the events of World’s End.

 Spider-Verse (Beginning in Amazing Spider-Man #9 from Marvel, November)

What happens when every variation of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man from across the Marvel Multiverse joins forces? You’ll find out in the Spider-Verse crossover, beginning in Amazing Spider-Man #9. Writer Dan Slott is bringing all the Spider-Men (and women) together to fight Morlun, the villain who was created in J. Michael Straczynski back in his celebrated run on the title in the early 2000’s, who once killed Peter Parker in the the storyline called “The Other”. Expect to see versions of Spidey that haven’t been seen in decades, including Peter Porker: The Amazing Spider-Ham. (Yes, really. That was a thing.) The entire event is going to run for five issues, with the first chapter hitting in November.

  Wytches (October, Image Comics)

Scott Snyder has become a legendary Batman creator in just the space of a few short years, becoming as quintessential a Batman writer as the likes of Frank Miller and Denny O’Neil. Aside from his Batman work, Snyder has also redefined comic book creatures of the night with his American Vampire series. His next creator-owned series, Wytches, debuts from Image Comics this October, and early buzz already has it pegged as another triumph. The premise of Wytches has all the people burned at the stake for witchcraft over the centuries dying to protect the real secret — that there really are deadly witches out there that are more frightening than anyone has imagined. Snyder reunited with his former Batman collaborator Jock for this new series, which comes out October 8th from Image. Like Saga, this could be the next breakout hit from Image Comics, so fans might want to jump on this one.

  Avengers/X-Men: Axis (Marvel, October)

Marvel’s 2012 event crossover Avengers Vs. X-Men was controversial among fans, but one thing is certain: they mostly all bought it anyway. AvX (as it came to be known) was a big financial success for the company, and they’re looking to replicate a little bit of that AvX magic with this October’s Avengers/X-Men: Axis. This will be a nine issue series running across three months, and the first three issues are coming this October, from writer Rick Remender and artist Adam Kubert and Leinil Francis Yu. In Axis, the Red Skull, after having stolen the late Professor Charles Xavier’s brain, is unleashing Onslaught, forcing the two super teams to put their differences aside (five bucks says that won’t last.)

  Ody-C #1 (Image Comics, November)

Matt Fraction (Sex Criminals, Hawkeye), along with artist Christian Ward (Infinite Vacation) is taking on the ancient Greek Odyssey, but with a bit of a twist: He’s gender-swapping the heroic Odysseus and making him a her, as the classical hero becomes Odyssia. The entire affair is going to be a 26-issue psychedelic and cosmic affair, unlike any interpretation of Homer’s epic poem before it. According to an interview with USA Today, Fraction described Ody-C as “a world that looks like a universe that Lady Gaga designed — with influences ranging from Barbarella and Moebius to Hindu iconography and burlesque and fetish wear” That description alone should be enough to get anyone to buy the first issue, which hits comic shops on November 26th.

  All-New Captain America #1 (Marvel)

Sam Wilson, a/k/a the Falcon, has long been an on-again, off-again sidekick for Steve Rogers, ever since the 1970s when they shared the title together. After a brilliant and charming turn by actor Anthony Mackie in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Falcon has become more popular than ever before, and now he’ll be taking over officially for Captain America in All-New Captain America #1 by writer Rick Remender and artist Stuart Immonen. After Steve Rogers loses his strength and vitality, and actually becomes the old man he really is, his old partner picks up the red, white, and blue uniform, only with a little added winged flair. Along with Thor becoming a woman, this fall sees the mainstays of the Marvel Universe get a little more diversified…at least for a little while. Issue #1 of All-New Captain America hits this November.

  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters #1 (October, IDW Comics)

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had quite the comeback this year, as their Michael Bay produced movie revival made $180 million at the North American box office, despite the online ire of many a child of the ’90s. Ghostbusters might also be on the verge of a movie comeback too, depending on which day of the week it is. But before these two can ever meet on the big screen (which probably won’t happen so don’t hold your breath), they’ll meet in IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles/Ghostbusters crossover mini series which hits comic shops this October from writers Eric Burnham and Tom Waltz, and artist Dan Schoening. According to the first issue solicitation, “When a new invention goes haywire, the Turtles are sent to a whole new type of New York City. One with a whole lot more ghosts… and Ghostbusters! The two teams will have to learn to get along quickly, because a new foe from the Turtles past has followed them and aims to conquer NYC!”

 Gotham Academy, Arkham Manor, and Gotham By Midnight (DC, October and November)

DC already has twelve Batman-centric monthly titles (on top of the weekly Batman Eternal series) and this fall they are adding three more. First up, In October we get both Gotham Academy and Arkham Manor. According to the official DC site,  Gotham Academy is a “teen drama set in the shadow of Batman and the craziness of Gotham City, with new characters and old plus a secret tie to Gotham’s past.” Gotham Academy is by writers Brenden Fletcher and Becky Cloonan, with art from Karl Kerschl.

Also in October, DC is bringing us Arkham Manor, from the creative team of of Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Nova) and Shawn Crystal (Deadpool, Wolverine and the X-Men). “When catastrophe strikes Arkham Asylum, where will Gotham City house the world’s most dangerous criminals, and when inmates are found murdered, what is Batman prepared to do in search of justice? Arkham’s madness comes home in Arkham Manor!” 

Finally, in November gives us the final Bat-centric monthly series of the fall with Gotham By Midnight. Writer Ray Fawkes (Constantine) and artist Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night) explore the supernatural parts of Gotham City, as well as introduces us to Jim Corrigan, most famously known for being the human host for the Spectre.
