“F*** KONAMI,” Guillermo del Toro Tweets in Support of Hideo Kojima

In terms of relationships between film directors and video game designers, the bromance between Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima is probably the strongest of them all. The two attempted to work on a new Silent Hill game together, but it was infamously canceled before Kojima’s relationship with Konami, of which he was formerly vice president, unceremoniously dissolved.

Following last night’s The Game Awards ceremony, del Toro took to Twitter to publicly support his friend, retweeting a clip of Kojima’s upcoming game Death Stranding and adding, “F-CK KONAMI.” He later retweeted a post about Kojima receiving the Industry Icon award and added, “VIVA KOJIMA,” and also wrote, “Konami cancelling SH after PT is one of the most moronic things I’ve ever witnessed.”

Speaking of Death Stranding, a cryptic new trailer for the project premiered at The Game Awards last night, and there is no better tribute to the friendship between del Toro and Kojima: Not only is del Toro involved with the game, but he himself is even a character in the game.

This comes after del Toro said last year that he was done working in video games: “I joined THQ [to work on Insane], and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami, so I have decided that in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll work with someone and his house would explode or something, you know?” He amended that statement earlier this year, though, saying, “Except with this man [Kojima], I’ll do whatever the fuck he wants.”

Kojima tweeted out an appreciation of del Toro’s support this morning, posting an illustration of del Toro and a Death Stranding poster, and writing, “Thanks to my dearest friend, Guillermo del Toro.”
