How will you be celebrating National Spider-Man Day? We’re choosing to dig into a brand new image from Sony Pictures Animation’s highly anticipated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. After nearly two decades of movies, Peter Parker is finally stepping aside to let another friendly neighborhood Spider-Man steal the spotlight in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. This time around, it’s all about Miles Morales. Created in 2011 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Morales is a plucky, biracial New York teenager who previously served as the Ultimate Universe’s resident Spider-Man in the wake of Peter Parker’s death in that universe before joining the main Marvel canon in the wake of 2015’s Secret Wars event. Now, Morales, voiced by The Get Down‘s Shameik Moore, is swinging into hearts and theaters all over the world as the star of his very own animated major motion picture.

“We’ve had a lot of Peter Parker,” Shameik Moore told Nerdist at San Diego Comic-Con. “I think it’s time to expand that universe and have other role models. Peter is a great role model, but so is Miles, and they are not the same person. With great power comes great responsibility. That sentence doesn’t mean the same thing for the two people.”

As the subtitle would suggest, though, Miles won’t be the only Spider-Man crawling across the big screen. We’re getting a whole multiverse of people who can do whatever a spider can, and chief among them is an older, more seasoned version of Peter Parker, played by Jake Johnson (The New Girl, Jurassic World).

“It’s Peter Parker at 40,” Johnson told Nerdist. “And it’s Peter Parker after the excitement of being Spider-Man has worn off and he’s now had this ability for a lot of years. He’s wondering if he did everything right. He’s at that moment in our lives that a lot of people get to where you say like, ‘Have I played my hand correctly?’ And then he meets this kid that has a very similar gift that needs something from him.”

Seeing Peter Parker transition from wisecracking, upstart superhero to metahuman mentor is going to be quite the narrative shift for Peter, but it’s a welcome change from the previous iterations.

In celebration of the upcoming film, Sony has given Nerdist an exclusive first-look at new art from the movie, which features Miles Morales looking at a collection of three of Peter Parker’s Spider-Man costumes.

On the left is the Electro-Proof suit, which first appeared in 1997’s Amazing Spider-Man #425 to help Peter and X-Man defeat the villainous Electro; in the middle is Peter Parker’s classic Spider-Man suit; and on the right, we have the Secret War Spider-Man suit, a S.H.I.E.L.D.-designed stealth suit worn during Nick Fury’s covert mission to overthrow the Latverian government.

This is just the tip of the iceberg from what we’ve seen and learned so far about the film. Not only will Into the Spider-Verse feature all of these iconic costumes, but additional spider-powered people as well like Spider-Ham (voiced by John Mulaney), Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), and Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) too.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits theaters on December 14, 2018.
