Although the last few years at DC has seen the company focus on Wonder Woman’s role as Amazon warrior and goddess, for several decades before, she was also the Ambassador from Themyscira to the outside world, whose mission it was to spread the gospel of peace and equality to the world of men. The old school Princess Diana can still be found though, in DC’s digital first series Sensation Comics featuring Wonder Woman.

According to writer Josh Elder, “[this story] grew out of my desire to reclaim Wonder Woman’s philosophy of peace through submission. I wanted to take that idea back and give it its due in a thoroughly modern, utterly grounded context. I wanted to show that mutual submission and willingness to be vulnerable is, in fact, the key to peace and harmony. True peace can never be found in victory or defeat, but only in mutual surrender.”

“I’ve actually spent quite a bit of time with diplomats of various stripes over the last 18 months or so,” Elder explained. “I work as a sort of ‘comics ambassador’ for the US State Department, traveling all around the globe extolling the virtues of comics as an art form and educational tool. It’s been a revelation to see how diplomacy actually works in practice. It’s all deal-making, finding that perfect solution where both sides win.  I like to think of Wonder Woman as that kind of diplomat. She really will try to see the best in everyone. She will try to bring everyone to a mutual accommodation and understanding. She will forbear. Right up until she won’t. Then you’d better watch out. I love that about her.”

Wonder Woman has always been both warrior and diplomat. Now she must stand against Ares, the god of war himself, if she is to bring peace to the central African nation of Itari, where a centuries-old tribal “Vendetta” threatens to plunge the nation into a bloody civil war.
