Exclusive: Robert Rodriguez Opening Museum of Frank Frazetta Art at SXSW

Heading to SXSW? Well, good for you, you lucky so-and-so! As if filling your belly with BBQ, beer, and all manner of uber-hip nerdiness wasn’t enough, we’re proud to exclusively announce that for a limited time only director Robert Rodriguez is opening a museum to display his impressive collection of Frank Frazetta artwork at SXSW. Go ahead and start scouring Craigslist for passes now — we’ll wait.

One of the most iconic fantasy artists in history, the Eisner Hall of Famer contributed art to classic works of fiction for Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, and countless others. With rare Frazetta works like “Death Dealer”, “Egyptian Queen”, “At the Earth’s Core”, “Conan”, and “Dark Kingdom” on display, you can bet your bottom dollar that it’ll be well worth your while. The gallery, which will be open to the public daily from March 8-16 from noon-8pm, is located at 920 Congress Ave. in Austin, TX, and will charge a $20 entrance fee which goes to benefit the Frazetta Estate’s preservation of art for a new Frank Frazetta museum.

As if a boatload of Frank Frazetta originals wasn’t enough to get your blood boiling with excitment, the gallery will feature an original Sin City piece from Frank Miller, original paintings by New Pop Art icon Sebastian Krüger, and original art by legendary film poster artist Drew Struzan (including the original poster art for The Thing), amongst others.

Furthermore, the museum will boast a gallery of Sin City character self-portrait paintings from cast members Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lady Gaga, Rosario Dawson, and Josh Brolin, painted with Rodriguez and artist George Yepes during the making of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Of the project, Rodriguez said in a press release, “This has to be the most kick ass museum in the world. For one, it’s the only place you can see original Frank Frazetta art, 12 masterpiece paintings total, alongside original art by Frank Miller, Drew Struzan, Sebastian Kruger and Clete Shields.” He continued, “Throw in character paintings by the cast of Sin City 2 and From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, and you will never see anything like this event anywhere, in any museum. I’m very excited to be showcasing this mind-blowing art by my favorite artists and collaborators in Austin.”

Attempted to go at noon on the 16th. It was already gone.

  2. CJ says:

I remember when FIRE & ICE finally debut on disc @SDCC with a.great Frazetta documentary released with it on an extra disc. , his work will remain legendary (closest artist today.doing the same. calibur is in my opinion Simon Bisely aka “Biz”) …. a shame SXSW is turning into a SDCC (this exhibit needs to travel all over to benefit the Museum!

  3. Rodolfo Ruiz says:

It speaks highly of Rodriguez to bring these artists to Austin. I’m feeling way lucky! I will definitely show up, it has been a dream to see live Frazetta paintings, add Drew Struzan, and it is just perfection!

  4. David Nunez says:

Just got back from Austin after viewing the Frazetta exhibit. Words cannot do it justice. I’ve been a fan since high school and this the first time I’ve seen original Frazetta paintings. The staff there was great. Especially Mr. Nixon Guerrero. He was incredibly nice and forthcoming with answers to any of our questions. Unfortunately there was only a handful of people there. I hope interest picks up between now the end of SXSW. I encourage any fans out there within driving distance of to go before they’re gone. No telling when we’ll have this opportunity again. In fact I’m planning on going again next Saturday.

  5. Robert Lopez says:

Frank Frazetta was and always will be the man! No one comes close! I just wish the show was for more than one week! CONGRATS to the Frazetta girls for honoring their father in such a great way! Congrats to Austin,TX and Mr.RR!

  6. Dennis Burnett says:

Well said Erica, as a young teen in the late 70s reading the R E Howard novels I loved all the Frazetta art on the covers and had several posters in my room. Cant wait for ARH studios statues.

  7. Ericka Roush says:

When I was a little girl, I would stare at these for HOURS. I would come out of the store and the sun would be down and I would wonder what happened. (when you had to come home when the street lights came on) I would be so transported that time would pass and I would be completely unaware. Amazing art work that I have loved all my life. Wish this was in California.
