October 26th is a date that fans of all things Kryptonian will want to circle in red, yellow, and blue on their calendars. For it’s on this date that the one and only Supergirl at long last flies into our homes in the premiere episode of her very first TV series. Produced by Arrow and The Flash mastermind Greg Berlanti for Warner Bros. and CBS, Supergirl stars the immensely likable and talented Melissa Benoist (of Glee and Whiplash fame) in the title role.
So to help get you as excited as we are, we asked artist Jeff Victor to pay homage to Kara Zor-El’s shining legacy. Victor has won a great deal of acclaim lately for his Evolution series of art prints, in which he depicts the varied appearances of an actor or character throughout their pop culture career. You’ll recall his recent Harley Quinn and John Hurt Evolutions (the latter of which Hurt liked so much he reached out to the illustrator to request his own copy).
For his latest Evolution, Victor has truly outdone himself, showcasing eight of Supergirl’s most memorable looks, starting with her first appearance in May 1959’s Action Comics #252…
Victor has included Kara’s 1970s shorts outfit, her 1980s headband-and-hairspray appearance, actress Helen Slater’s turn in 1984’s Supergirl movie, cartoon maestro Bruce Timm’s 1990s take for Superman: The Animated Series, the late comic artist Michael Turner’s 2004 version of the character, designer Lauren Faust’s adorable Super Best Friends Forever incarnation for DC Nation, and Melissa Benoist’s newly minted Maid of Might. Benoist expressed her enthusiasm for this special Evolution, calling it “awesome,” when I presented her with the very first print copy at this week’s Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour in Los Angeles…
I’ll have my full interview with the actress up soon. In the meantime, you can order your own copy of Supergirl Evolution at Jeff Victor’s online store. Up, up, and away!
