Ewan McGregor Busts Out His Guitar for an ‘Hourglass’ Cover

Ewan McGregor‘s singing voice was most famously showcased in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge, and it has been shamefully underused since then. Whether he was working his way through The Beatles, Sting, or the movie’s original duet (with Nicole Kidman) “Come What May,” Ewan made scores of fangirls, and a fair few fanboys, swoon for his croon. His sparse usage of his musical talent makes this Catfish and the Bottlemen cover all the sweeter. Covering “Hourglass” in entirely one take, McGregor guitar slides his way out of a music video and into our playlists.

Catfish and the Bottlemen is an indie rock British band who formed in North Wales. Welsh/Whovian factoid: South Wales is home to Cardiff and the Doctor Who studios! Zane Lowe, now of Apple Music’s Beats 1 station, debuted many of their singles at his previous Radio 1 gig, gaining the group much traction. Earlier this year, prior to David Letterman’s departure, they appeared on CBS’s Late Nite performing their single “Kathleen.”

McGregor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, has recently admitted that he has no qualms about returning to the storied franchise, should a future film require some hologram or Force Spirit appearances from wise old Kenobi. We haven’t any qualms to this proposal, either Ewan. Nary a qualm.

In Disney’s upcoming live adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, McGregor will be playing the role of Lumiere, the charming French butler-turned-candlestick. If the Emma Watson-led film sticks to the animation’s musical repertoire, we may very well be hearing Ewan belt out a smashing rendition of “Be Our Guest!” If Disney has good sense, they will give us a McGregor-full Beauty and the Beast soundtrack.
