Marvel and DC arenât the only ones with the reboot fever. This June, Archie Comics will end a run that started in 1942. Thatâs right — 1942. Archie #666 will bring to close one of the most seminal stories in comics and make way for a brand new take on the Archie family.
Tom DeFalco will write the final issue with art from Dan Parent, Fernando Ruiz, and Tim Kennedy. Parent will also be providing six different covers that feature different members of the Archie cast. If nothing else, Archie Comics is sending this version of the Riverdale crew out in style.
While we donât know much about Archieâs final trip to the malt shop yet, the solicitation text reveals that this last issue will serve as a trip down memory lane, with âwinks and nodsâ to past stories. In a day and age when comic series rarely get past issue 50 before it is relaunched, renumbered, or rebooted, itâs sad to see such a long-running start over from scratch.
That said, from the ashes of the former series comes a new brand new day in Riverdale. The new Archie series is set to be helmed by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples, which is about as big a creative team you can get. If you have never jumped into this world, now is the perfect time. As a publisher, Archie Comics has been putting out some of the best books on the stands, so itâs hard to not be excited about a brand new series starring some of the best characters comic books have ever produced.
