Tomorrow’s Ashes from Black Mask Studios is the third book in a trilogy of sorts. Branded “A Godkiller Story,” it is kinda, sorta, a sequel to Godkiller, although that book is not required reading to enjoy Tomorrow’s Ashes. Set in the same world, this story sees a heroine named Halfpipeâseriously, that’s her nameâout to rescue Godkiller hero Tommy. Violent, dark, and sexy, Tomorrow’s Ashes does not pull any punches. Godkiller was a big deal, landing among the Kirkus Review’s Best Indie Books of 2015, so a sequel (no matter how loose) is something to be excited about.
Written by Matt Pizzolo with art from Anna Wieszczyk, Tomorrow’s Ashes is one of the most unique and energetic series to hit the stands in quite some time. Wieszczyk’s art is something special, a mixture of cartooning and real-world photos. It has an animated feel, like static images from a bloody and graphic adult cartoon. There’s lots to love in the this first oversized issue. It’s fast, brutal, and more than a little sexy. So sexy that we had to slightly censor some of the pages below just so we could show them to you.
Pizzolo writes the issue with grace and precision. You may not be familiar with the world of Godkiller, but that’s okay. This issue doesn’t bog you down in the details, but it manages to give you everything you need to have a good time. It moves fast, but allows you to pick up what information you need along the way. On top of all that, it’s lots of fun, assuming your idea of fun is the visual of somebody literally getting a bomb ripped out of their stomach. It’s not for the faint of heart, in other words.
So, take a moment and check out the preview pages below. After you’ve scoped those out, head to your local comic shop and order a copy of Tomorrow’s Ashes #1. It’s a massive first issue, weighing in at 96 pages, and it’s loaded with good stuff.
