Steven Spielberg’s upcoming adaptation of Ernie Cline‘s Ready Player One is starting to come together. And while word has yet to come down about which actors are up for the lead character, Wade Watts; five actresses are said to be on the shortlist for the female lead.
Elle Fanning (pictured above), Olivia Cooke, and Lola Kirke have reportedly been named as the leading contenders for Ready Player One. However, there are two other actresses who are also rumored to be up for the role of Art3mis, the avatar of Samantha Cook inside the virtual world known as the Oasis, which is the primary setting for the story.
According to the latest report, Fanning, Cooke, Kirke, and the two currently unidentified actresses will test for Art3mis with casting director Ellen Lewis before Spielberg finishes his work on Bridge of Spies and The BFG. The goal is to narrow the field of actresses down before Spielberg turns his full attention to the project.
Fanning is best known for her roles in Super 8, Phoebe in Wonderland, Somewhere, We Bought a Zoo, and Maleficent. Cooke is a series regular on Bates Motel as Emma, and she had a starring role in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl in addition to the upcoming film Katie Says Goodbye. Kirke had a role in Gone Girl as well as a starring turn in Mistress America, and she is also starring opposite Tom Cruise in the crime thriller Mena.
Ready Player One will enter movie theaters on December 15, 2017.
