Elisabeth Moss, Michelle Forbes Rumored for TRUE DETECTIVE Season Two, Potential Plot Details Revealed

Yesterday, word went out that Vince Vaughn was in early talks for a role on the second season of HBO’s hit anthology drama, True Detective. While that hasn’t changed, what has – thanks to a new report from The Wrap – is who might be joining him and what he and others might actually be doing on the series. According to the outlet, in addition to the names of Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch, Elisabeth Moss and Michelle Forbes are now reported to be in talks with the network. The Wrap has also released the following potential character breakdowns for the actors:

Vaughn: “Frank Semyon – a former thug-turned-businessman who’s working with a local mayor and his political cohorts to spearhead the construction of a high-speed railway system that links Southern California to Northern California in order to reap financial gains from federal grants and land purchases.”

Moss: “Ani Bezzerides – a tough, no-nonsense Monterey sheriff whose troubled upbringing has driven her to gambling and alcohol.”

Kitsch: “Paul Woodrugh – a handsome, 28-year-old military veteran who has seen his own share of violence and destruction.”

Farrell: “Ray Velcoro – a man who has been damaged by years of turmoil in both his personal and professional lives.”

Forbes: “it’s possible she could play either Farrell’s ex-wife (a survivor of sexual assault) or Vaughn’s charming but mercurial wife.”

The Wrap’s also the first to release a potential plot synopsis, which they describe as follows: “The second season will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who’s found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought. Caspar’s 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur — satanic symbols etched on his chest. It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the occult.”

That’s a lot of news that’s still in speculation, but so far, this list of names seems the most likely. It fits the mold of the first season cast: actors with major chops that haven’t had a big break in a while or at all (Vaughn has had breaks, but not in drama). As for the plot synopsis, if it’s fake, it’s the most extensive one we’ve seen to date. A script for the season two premiere does exist, so it is possible it’s been leaked, but as we said yesterday, we probably won’t know anything definitive until after the Emmys later this month.

The road to production on True Detective season two (which doesn’t even have a locked in premiere date yet) has been a bumpy one, but exciting none the less. At this point, all we’re waiting for is for HBO to make the announcements official so we can stop speculating and start anticipating.
