And Now: Edible Pop Culture Portraits on Spoons

Instead of just shoveling food into your mouth, take a moment. Stop, look, admire what’s on your spoon—you never know what you might find.

Like the work of Romanian Architect Ioana Vanc (@ioanavanc). The quirky artisan is taking food art to the next, tiniest, minuscule level by creating intensely detailed masterpieces all small enough to fit into a spoon. Every piece of art is created using edible ingredients and the results are stunning.

There are beautiful land and cityscapes, animals and celebrities, but it’s the geekiest of spoons that will melt your heart. Tiny pop culture portraits of characters from Star Wars, Frozen, and more are so characteristically on point you’d be hard pressed to believe that they’re all made of food.

Chewbacca spoon-02132016

Like this tiny Chewbacca, made with just two ingredients—potato and black radish—while a menacing Darth Vader is made of nothing more than precisely cut eggplant. Characters with more color require a few more ingredients, but not many. Yoda is made from a combination of well placed avocado, bread, potato and black radish, while Artoo and Threepio are made up of black radish, grapefruit peel, and food coloring. Clearly what we’re learning here is that black radish is the ultimate food medium.

My favorite of the bunch is the Batman spoon, given his intricate detailed (he’s made of eggplant, apple, and ham) and the likelihood that he probably takes like justice. The Caped Crusader is even surrounded by a legion of edible bats. Ioana’s food tweezers clearly got a work out when it came to the Dark Knight.
