It looks like a follow up to Edge of Tomorrow is really happening. Warner Bros. has lined up two writers to craft a sequel to the critically acclaimed sci-fi action film.

Deadline broke the story that Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have signed on to write Edge of Tomorrow 2. Shrapnel and Waterhouse have previously collaborated on a biopic based on the life of Jesse Owens called Race, and The Gray Man, which Sony is positioning as a potential franchise for Charlize Theron.

Original Edge of Tomorrow screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie went on twitter to confirm that Doug Liman will return as the director of the sequel.

Correction: I am NOT directing The sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. Doug Liman is. I will be involved but there’s no Edge without Doug.

McQuarrie’s involvement with Edge of Tomorrow 2 will reportedly be as a producer with an advisory role on the film’s story. Presumably stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt will be back for the sequel, but that remains unconfirmed for now.

Edge of Tomorrow was based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel All You Need Is Kill, and it was widely dismissed as a box office disappointment when it was released in 2014. However, Edge of Tomorrow has earned a huge following and its very respectable global box office opened the door for the sequel. (Plus, we absolutely loved it and named it one of our favorite films of the year!)

Of course, Edge of Tomorrow 2 won’t happen right away. Liman is slated to begin filming Gambit later this year, and Cruise has Mission: Impossible 6 lined up when he’s done with The Mummy reboot. There is also the important question of how Cruise and Blunt’s characters will return considering that the original Edge of Tomorrow appeared to finish their story.
