While fans everywhere were bummed that the pairing of Edgar Wright and Marvel with Ant-Man ultimately didn’t work out for either party, it looks like Wright is wasting no time in bouncing back from that particular disappointment. First, he’s got the upcoming comedy Baby Driver starring Jon Hamm, and it looks like he’s already lined up his next project after that, and it’s a doozy:
It’s just been anounced that Edgar Wright will be directing none other than Johnny Depp in an adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s children’s book Fortunately, the Milk. Take all that in for a moment: Wright, Depp and Gaiman, together. That’s a geek power trio for the ages.
The script for the movie is going to be written by Bret Mackenzie, best known as part of the musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords. Johnny Depp will be producing, together with Lego Movie co-producers Animal Logic Entertainment. The movie is intended to be a hybrid of live action and animation.
Although Gaiman is best known for his adult novels and comics like American Gods, Stardust, and Sandman, among many others, he’s also a prolific children’s book author, most notably Coraline and The Graveyard Book. Fortunately, the Milk was published in 2013, and is described as “a whimsical tale of a father who leaves one morning to buy milk and returns home with fantastic stories about his aliens, pirates, and time travel” for his son, who is the narrator of the story. The book is illustrated by comic book artist Skottie Young, best known for his lil’ Marvel variant covers.
