EA is offering up the Game of the Year Edition of Plant vs. Zombies on Origin for the PC and Mac (it was $4.99 previously).
The catch is that you’ll need an Origin account in order to take advantage of the deal, but EA’s download service is fine, all things considered. It’s a friendly way from EA to get you to bypass Steam (although, you know, good luck with that).
The Game of the Year Edition adds new content to the 2012 tower defense game, including the ability to customize your own zombie. The deal comes on the five-year anniversary of the original game’s release from casual game studio PopCap.
Since then, it’s racked up millions of sales and a shelf full of awards while getting gamers to do a little anti-zombie gardening. It’s genuinely one of the more engaging and addictive games in the genre, eating up hours of my time, but looking at the franchise history over just five short years, you can see the weird arc that EA (and gaming as a whole) has started to take.
The free-to-play sequel, Plants vs. Zombies 2 is still out there in the wild on computers and mobile (that game will celebrate its first anniversary in July).
With the new console generation, the series took a left turn for the weird with the release of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, a class-based shooter (yup) for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC. EA recently added microtransactions to the shooter which has had to carve out a niche for itself in an already crowded genre.
