E3 2014: Nintendo Press Conference Liveblog

Nintendo may not have been a part of yesterday’s press conference-palooza, but that doesn’t mean the venerable video game makers don’t have plenty to present. Opting instead for their increasingly reliable route of a Nintendo Direct livestream, the company is set to make announcements about hotly anticipated titles like Super Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors, and Star Fox Wii U. Okay, that last one might be wishful thinking, but you can’t blame me for trying. I’ll do fifty barrel rolls as compensation for breaking the circle of trust.

To watch the press conference live, simply scroll down and tune into the livestream. To bring you up to the minute analysis, I will be liveblogging and livetweeting today’s press conference, so refresh this page for updates as the conference progresses. We want to hear what you think too, so give us your reactions in the comments below and use the #NerdistE3 hashtag on Twitter to let us know your thoughts!

Liveblog (refresh for updates)

9:48 AM: All right, folks, that wraps up our series of liveblogs! Thanks for tuning in and remember to keep your eyes here all week for the latest and greatest from the E3 show floor.

9:47 AM: Not quite. Palutena, Goddess of Light of Kid Icarus fame, is joining Super Smash Bros. with an array of impressive moves.

9:44 AM: WHOA ANIME SMASH BROS? WHAT?!

9:43 AM: They’ll be bringing other updates and gaming news on their Twitch channel over the course of the event, and they’ll even have Miyamoto-san in attendance

9:42 AM: Nintendo will be streaming their post-show live on their Twitch channel and they’re having the Super Smash Bros. Smash Fest this afternoon.

9:41 AM: This reminds me of Community‘s paintball episodes, but with a CG-animated movie twist.

9:37 AM: Switching between a human and a squid? Make that adorable Animorphs!

9:36 AM: Splatoon looks like adorable aquatic paintball. I’m really hoping that they’re doing this developer interview at the Osaka aquarium.

9:34 AM: Hey, look! The worst kept secret of the E3 show floor! It’s Mario Maker, which is a pretty ingenious move all things considered. You can design your own custom Mario levels. Not sure why they didn’t open it to fan made levels ages ago.

9:32 AM: What is this spacefaring JRPG action?

9:31 AM: Nintendo may be frustratingly obstinate at times, but they know how to make an awesome platformer. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse looks like multicolored mayhem and unbridled fun.

9:28 AM: There is a 2-player mode, but it’s not a splitscreen experience. One uses the screen, one uses the gamepad’s screen. Impa, Midna, Zelda, and Link are all playable characters.

9:28 AM: I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the Dynasty Warriors model, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Hyrule Warriors. Looks pretty enough.

9:27 AM: And they’re including Bayonetta in the package perhaps? Either way, you’ll be able to play them both on Wii U. Update: yep, it’s coming this October as twofer.

9:26 AM: Bayonetta 2 looks just as batshit crazy and brain-meltingly fun as the first one. Well played, Platinum Games.

9:25 AM: Okay, it’s a nice little trailer for Pokemone Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

9:23 AM: And now, a Pokemon trainer wanders into a cave. Praise be to Lord Helix.

9:22 AM: A gorgeously rendered, open world Legend of Zelda game? Holy smokes. Hi-ya, Epona! Run away!

9:20 AM: And now we’re entering the Legend of Zelda portion of the show. Hopefully it’s not just Hyrule Warriors.

9:19 AM: Still doesn’t make Toad any less of a cheap jerk in Mario Kart 8, but it’s certainly a surprise.

9:18 AM: No new Mario game? You’re damn right — it’s Toad o’clock! Say hello to Captain Toad.

9:15 AM: Yoshi’s Wooly World is “centered around exploration” and will feature 2-player mode.

9:12 AM: A Yoshi-based successor to Kirby’s Epic Yarn? This is all types of adorable.

9:10 AM: Super Smash Bros. on Wii U will be the first game to support Amiibo. Your figurine will keep persistent stats, attributes, and skills.

9:09 AM: Their new NFC figurine line is called Amiibo. Reggie referred to them as “springing to life in cool new ways”.

9:04 AM: Gotta love this hotel wi-fi. Looks like we’re seeing some Nintendo-branded NFC figurines? Or is my stream still buffering?

9:00 AM: Here we go! Let’s do this, guys. Looks like Robot Chicken is handling today’s press conference
