One of the best things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that it takes things that are everyday occurrences in the Marvel Comics but applies real world consequences to them. For example, there are near catastrophic alien invasions on a yearly basis in the comics, and the citizens of New York just kind of shrug them off afterwards. In the MCU, just one alien invasion, the one we witnessed in the original Avengers film, was enough to change the world forever.
The Marvel Netflix shows make mention of the “incident” of New York, and Spider-Man: Homecoming is all about the direct results of that particular alien invasion. And it makes sense, because something like that would be huge, and a game changer for the entire world.
Another event that would have global consequences would be the reveal that ancient Asgardian gods from Norse mythology are anything but myths, thanks to the public knowledge that both Thor and his half brother Loki are real live beings. While some citizens of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would no doubt simply explain them away as advanced aliens, their appearance would almost certainly turn certain other people into believers of the old Norse religion. And now, an Easter egg in Spider-Man: Homecoming seems to prove this is the case.
A user on Reddit spotted this little gem when watching Homecoming. In the scene where Aunt May and Peter Parker are having dinner at a local Thai place, right next door you can see “The Korean Church of Asgard.” So it looks like humans are worshipping the Gods of Asgard once more, or at least a handful are. Is this new religion something that will be brought up in Thor: Ragnarok? Who knows, but you might think something like this would make Thor feel slightly awkward around regular folk. An early episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also hinted at a revival Asgardian religion, so maybe that’s something that will be explored further on that show.
Or, you know, it’s just the filmmakers having fun with us. But considering how almost everything in the MCU is on purpose, I’d expect to see more Asgardian worshipers in the near future.
