Hot on the heels of an introductory teaser that made a literalized sight gag of the idiom “breaking the glass ceiling,” we get the first full trailer of Doctor Who‘s forthcoming eleventh series, and the first in the program’s history to feature a woman as the spotlighted Time Lord. If the aforementioned teaser and this new trailer are any indication, Doctor Who will spend at least some of its early time and energy paying lip service to the unique hurdles that a female-identifying Doctor must contend with; one particular instance in the trailer shows us that not everyone is so quick to heed the authority of a Doctor in Jodie Whitaker’s form. But she’s got a few things working in her favor.

One is an assortment of faithful companions, namely Yasmin Kahn (Mandip Gill) Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), who we see defending her claim to title of “the boss,” against the skepticism of, presumably, her third companion, Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh).
But more importantly than even that is the inherent heroism surging through this iteration of the age-old day-saver. Our first real introduction to the Thirteenth Doctor comes in the form of a gallant proclamation: “I’m the Doctor. When people need help, I never refuse.” She may wind up being prone to questionable judgment or the occasional goofy exploit, as have so many of her forebears, but what we see thus far in the Thirteenth Doctor is a real hero, and one we’re pumped to spend a series with.
