DOCTOR WHO Returns to Earth for “The Caretaker” with New Trailer and Images

We’re just about exactly at the halfway mark for this series of Doctor Who (which is pretty good considering we’ve had to wait months in between halves of series the past two, and then a whole year almost between 7 and 8) and the Doctor’s next port of call is… the Coal Hill School? Yes, it looks as though everybody’s favorite Time Lord, this time the skinny, grey, Scottish model, will be again returning the school at which his granddaughter Susan attended all those many hundreds of years (and 51 Earth ones) ago, and where Clara Oswald and Danny Pink now teach. Bad things are a-brewing, surely.

The episode in question is “The Caretaker,” written by Gareth Roberts and Steven Moffat and directed by Paul Murphy. Roberts is no stranger to this kind of Doctor-stuck-in-normal-situations episode, having given Matt Smith two of his funniest outings with Series 5’s “The Lodger” and Series 6’s “Closing Time.” It would appear this is a third chapter in that style of storytelling, except while the first two were decidedly companion-lite, “The Caretaker” is companion-very-heavy with Clara having to balance both the sides of her life without much rest when the Doctor arrives pretending to be the school’s new custodian, or “caretaker” if you will. (Will you? Please do, it makes it so much easier.) The episode also features an alien robot-spider-crab thing. So that’s cool.

Will this episode feature references to the First Doctor’s first companions? I hope so! It did show in “The Day of the Doctor” that Ian Chesterton is the school’s headmaster; maybe that means William Russell will make a cameo appearance. I would LOOOOOOVE that.

See more from the episode in the below gallery and trailer. “The Caretaker” will air Saturday, September 27, at 9/8c on BBC America. What do you think of this series so far? Let’s talk about it in the comments below!

I’m disappointed that Craig only got two episodes – I really liked that character.
