DOCTOR WHO Lands in Detroit with Free TARDIS Library

Books are more than capable of transporting readers through time and space, and in Detroit, that takes a whole other meaning when said books are plucked from the city’s new neighborhood library. We learned about the free library in Woodbridge that resembles a TARDIS from Doctor Who courtesy of Laughing Squid. TARDIS has a different meaning in this context; according to the builder, it’s a Totally Awesome Reading Dispensary In Society. Yes, it is totally awesome, and yes, if I lived in the area, I’d go out of my way to stop by.

The TARDIS is a natural choice for a library. We’ve previously seen a similar concept tour around the United Kingdom. In this case, Woodbridge resident Dan Zemke landed on the TARDIS as the housing for his book program because it combined his passion for reading and Doctor Who. Tired of looking at an eyesore of an empty lot across the street, Zemke was inspired to take action and worked with his dad to make a life-size TARDIS packed with adventures.

And by life-size, I mean it’s 10 feet tall and weighs one ton. Moving the massive display took slightly more logistics than the Doctor flipping some controls on the center console.

Zemke managed to get the library installed on the lot though. Its shelves are painted to look like the interior of the time traveling ship, and the bright blue exterior is a splash of needed color on the lot. This picture from Chelsea Welch shows how nicely the TARDIS fits in:

The finished TARDIS is available to anyone to come take and/or leave a book. You can keep up with all the latest on the library at TARDIS Detroit.

Have you used neighborhood libraries before? Tell us all about it in the comments.
