Last week, Marvelâs Doctor Strange landed the cover of Entertainment Weekly with a glimpse of Benedict Cumberbatch in costume as Dr. Stephen Strange and a few pieces of concept art from the upcoming movie. On Monday, Marvel released high resolution images of everything from the EW story, and added one new picture to boot: the first look at Doctor Strangeâs Sanctum Sanctorum.
The Sanctum Sanctorum has played a role in the comics since Strangeâs first appearance in 1963, and it is one of the most unique buildings in the Marvel Universe. Supposedly located in New Yorkâs Greenwich Village, the Sanctum Sanctorum is not only Stephen Strangeâs home, it is also where he keeps his mystical artifacts and dangerous relics. Additionally, the Sanctum Sanctorum has been the headquarters for the Defenders and the New Avengers during Strangeâs time on both teams.
Marvelâs new Sanctum Sanctorum concept art is immediately recognizable by the circular window with four swooping lines, which is straight from the design used in the comics.
An earlier piece of concept art depicted the Chamber of Relics, with Strangeâs Cloak of Levitation visible in the background. Some of Strangeâs other mystical artifacts include the Book of the Vishanti and the Orb of Agamotto.
The rest of the Doctor Strange concept art can be seen in our gallery below, including a look at Strangeâs adventures in the astral plane and the aftermath of the accident that robbed Strange of his surgical abilities.
Doctor Strange will cast its spell on moviegoers on November 4, 2016.
