Disney Previews New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Theme Park Attraction

Coming next summer to California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort, the old thrill ride The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is getting a marvelous new makeover; it will reopen as the all-new “Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: BREAKOUT!” attraction. In this new version of the ride, park guests will visit the Collector’s cosmic fortress, where he houses rarities from all over the universe — including the Guardians themselves.

The team will have to break out of the fortress, and riders on the new attraction will get to escape along with them. The entire main Guardians of the Galaxy cast shot all-new scenes for the ride, including Benicio Del Toro returning as the Collector. The new version of the ride will feature a variety of randomized experiences and audio-visual elements, similar to the 2011 upgrade to Star Tours, giving park guests a different experience each time they go on the attraction.

Now the official Disney Theme Parks blog has a detailed look at what the giant fortress will look like when the attraction opens in summer 2017, the same summer that Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 hits theaters. The miniature models, which you can see pictured in our gallery below, were created by Walt Disney Imagineering to serve as a guide for the retrofit, which will soon happen on the exterior of the Tower of Terror attraction. The new attraction will be a “warehouse, fortress-like power plant” which will include many bright colors to reflect the Guardians’ comic book origins. You can see a video previewing the new attraction above.

Rumor has it that “Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission BREAKOUT!” will be the cornerstone of an all-new Marvel themed land heading over to California Adventure, taking over part of what is currently the Hollywood Backlot area. While this is just a rumor at the moment, it’s one I tend to believe, if only because it seems highly unlikely they’ll just have one Marvel ride in the whole park. If an official announcement of a Marvel land is coming, expect it at Disney’s D23 Expo next year.
