Back in October, word broke that Disney was planning to give 101 Dalmatians villainess, Cruella de Vil her own live-action origin film. And it appears that the house of mouse has their eye on Emma Stone to portray Cruella in her younger years.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stone is in early talks to play the title character of Cruella, and Disney is reportedly eager to begin filming later this year even though the project doesnât currently have a director. Aline Brosh McKenna wrote an early draft of Cruella, but Kelly Marcel is the current writer tasked with fleshing out the backstory of one of Disneyâs most iconic adversaries.
Cruella de Vil was created by Dodie Smith in her 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, which was adapted as an animated film by Walt Disney Studios in 1961. Her appearance in that movie has come to define the character.
Glenn Close portrayed Cruella de Vil in the live-action remake of 101 Dalmatians and its sequel. More recently, Victoria Smurfit portrayed Cruella on Once Upon a Time and Wendy Raquel Robinson stepped into the role on the Disney Channel original movie, Descendants.
Itâs going to be difficult to make a movie about a character whose defining trait is a desire to skin animals and wear their fur. But Disney found success with its Maleficent movie starring Angelina Jolie as the title character. And if Cruella can also find an audience, how long will it be before Snow Whiteâs evil Queen and The Little Mermaidâs Ursula get their own films?
