Warm up your voices, because Disney’s animated blockbuster Frozen is on the tracks for becoming a Broadway musical.
The news hit The Daily Mail that screenwriter and co-director Jennifer Lee will write the book, and husband-and-wife songwriting team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez have also signed on to write additional music for the stage version of the film. (Maybe fans of bonus tracks like “Just the Spare” or “Life’s Too Short“ will see them have their day at last?)
Lopez and Anderson-Lopez are no strangers to the Great White Way — they’re both accomplished stage composers. Case in point, Lopez won a Tony for the scores of “Avenue Q” and The Book of Mormon.”
So far, Idina Menzel isn’t attached to play Elsa; she’s currently in the middle of a tour. So that leaves us wondering who gets to hit THAT NOTE every night, plus two weekend matinees, with a rest on Monday? That’s a pretty strenuous song, vocally, so maybe there’ll be a double cast?
Rumor has it that “Frozen” will open in 2017, though no production schedule has been announced.
According to Variety, Disney Theatrical producer Thomas Schumacher was quoted as saying:
âIt will come as no surprise that the EGOT-winning Broadway veteran Robert Lopez and the Oscar and Grammy winning Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who wrote the indelible songs for the film, will be working on the show and that Oscar winner Jennifer Lee, co-director and screenwriter of the film, will be working on the book of the stage version,â said Schumacher. âNo other staffing or dates have been announced.â
All I know is that MILLIONS of children have been practicing being Elsa ad nauseum for over a year now — (and maybe a few adults too… in their cars… alone… *cough*) so which one of these tiny tots will be the lucky one to nab the role of young Elsa? Will Maddie and Zoe finally get their big break on Broadway? Let’s practice some lines together now: “GO AWAY ANNA! GO AWAY ANNA! GO AWAY ANNA!” That’s good! Now, once again, with feeling! [Insert “Let it Go” joke here.]

Um… Do you even know what Idina Menzel looks like? There no way she is ever going to play Elsa on stage wold tour or not.
Um… did you see Wicked? She didn’t really look like Margaret Hamilton in The Wizard of Oz either. HASHTAG MAKEUP. We’re talking BROADWAY, not live action film.
