Although live-action adaptations of classic Disney animated films are all the rage at the moment, the whole trend started with Disney’s 101 Dalmatians remake back in 1996. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is going back to the Dalmatians well with another live-action remake, this time focusing on the younger days of the villainous Cruella de Vil, and starring Oscar winner Emma Stone in the title role. I, Tonya‘s Craig Gillespie is now circling the project to direct, which was first announced last year, and will simply be called Cruella.
This movie is going to be a departure from previous adaptations, which have stuck pretty close to the settings and trappings of the animated films they are inspired by. But according to this report, this version won’t be set in time of the original, but will instead be “set in the early 1980s with a punk vibe.” Well, Cruella’s hair and make-up are kind of punk rock when you think about it. Does that mean we will get a punk/New Wave style version of the timeless song “Cruella de Vil??” Because we can get on board with that if done right.
Although it was unknown if this movie was going to go to the Disney+ streaming service like the upcoming Lady and the Tramp and Lilo & Stitch remakes, with a huge star like Emma Stone starring in it, all signs point to going theatrical with this one. This movie is still in the earliest stages and doesn’t have a release date, but don’t expect it before 2020 at the earliest.
