DISNEY and Surrealism Come Together in a Salvador Dali Virtual Reality Exhibit

Had the legendary Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí been alive to experience virtual reality, we’re sure he would have approved. He might have even used it for his own artwork! Imagine those possibilities for a second… Now prepare to be blown away–Dalí and VR is actually a thing you can experience at the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida right now! Check out the quick video above highlighting this VR experience using Dalí’s 1935 painting Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet’s “Angelus”.

Welcome to “Disney & Dalí: Architects of the Imagination.” Step inside the meticulous mind of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, paired with one of the greatest innovators of animation, Walt Disney. They might come from entirely different backgrounds, but they were only 3 years apart. Both were active during a major creativity boom for art and film, and even worked on a few projects together. In “Disney & Dalí,” you’ll be able to see original paintings, story sketches, conceptual artwork, and more from both artists.

But that’s never the pinnacle of the wonders you can enjoy at “Disney & Dalí.” Virtual reality is one obvious enhancement to art. We see the world in 3D, yet most artworks exist in 2D. But mash VR and paintings together and you can enjoy some really trippy moments past the canvas. (We humbly request a VR Sandman: Overture, please!) Dalí Museum Executive Director, Hank Hine, states that “Disney & Dalí heralds a new era in art exhibitions. Visitors can expect a multi-sensory environment of moving image, soundscapes, and the transformative aura of exquisite individual paintings.”

This exhibit is free with admission to the Dalí Museum. It opened last month and runs until June 12, 2016. Hop over to the official website for tickets, info, and more! Can’t go there in person? This is 2016, they have ways around that issue! You can view a 360º video produced by the Dalí Museum for online viewing. Android phone users, get yourself a Google Cardboard VR viewer. Apple phone users, go to the YouTube app. And you can also try it out through Chrome.

Let us know how you feel about VR art exhibitions like this! And while you’re at it, tell us your favorite Dalí artwork and Disney creation!
