Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller on THE LEGO MOVIE and 22 JUMP STREET

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are busy men. The pair seem to bounce from directing major animated films like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to The LEGO Movie (opening this Friday) to R-Rated comedies like 21 Jump Street with ease.

Nerdist got a chance to catch up with them at the premiere of The LEGO Movie and the two were excited about doing something that no one has ever been able to do before – well, legally anyway: bring the DCU and Marvel together in one movie. The LEGO Movie features Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern all coming together to save the day.

“We had a ton of fun,” said Lord. “We got a lot of latitude from a lot of people to like, mess with their properties…. We wanted to make it feel like an eight year old made the film.”

Miller added, “Yeah, it was pretty amazing. It’s the kind of thing you can only do in a LEGO movie, like mix all these different worlds and genres together.”

After the success of 21 Jump Street, what could fans expect from the sequel, opening June 13? The directing duo couldn’t contain their excitement for 22 Jump Street:

Phil: It’s going to be crazier –

Chris: It’s going to be crazier, more action —

Phil: There’s an amazing fistfight in the third act that I think will be all-time —

Chris: I’d say that it sort of does for sequels what the first one was doing for buddy cop bro-mances.

Phil: Yeah. Which is making a pretty decent one… They need to be watched simultaneously, side-by-side, projected with full sound playing at all channels.

The LEGO Movie opens this Friday and 22 Jump Street starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill opens June 13, 2014.
