I didn’t either! I mean, I’ve seen them ride the wakes of boats, but I didn’t know they loved gnarly tubes.
The video below was captured with a Phantom 2 drone and a GoPro off Esperance in western Austrailia. It shows pods of bottlenose dolphins apparently enjoying the crystal clear waves like we would — by surfing:
“Dolphins are well known for ‘surfing’ both on waves and on the wakes made by boats,” says Dr. Jason Goldman an animal behavior researcher and science writer based in Los Angeles, “So I donât see any way in which this is new or surprising.” That is to say, dolphins just wanna have fun.
“Animals including dolphins absolutely play. Some is ‘just’ for fun, and some is good ‘practice’ for engaging socially with others.”
My only other question is, what’s dolphin for “brah”?
