It’s funny that the Nerdist Podcast crew talked to Ed Helms in today’s edition about his love for bluegrass and his banjo playing, and Jonah related his sad tale of missing out on the banjo he saved up to buy (apparently the only banjo in Hawaii), because there’s this:
That’s an 8-year-old playing the banjo, Johnny Mizzone. Robbie Mizzone, 12, is on the fiddle, and Tommy Mizzone, 13 years of age, is the guitar player. They’re the Sleepy Man Banjo Boys, and they’ll be here all week.
And here they are playing the same “Flint Hill Special” before an audience:
So, when the guys were talking about how hard it is to play the banjo, they’re absolutely right… unless you’re a very, very talented 8-year-old natural.
(Off screen Steve Martin) “Yes pick up your weapon and strike me down young bluegrasser and finish your training.”
A lesson for everyone. Trem bars and fret tapping are for wimps. Love that banjo roll on the guitar at the end, that’s just sick.
Very impressive! I know someone about 7 times older that plays the banjo like that. I wanna share this with him. You gotta hand it to those three boys, especially the 8-year old. So much talent at such a young age.
couldnt you use bomgar or vnc on the ipad to remotely scroll?
Bonus points for the Millennium Falcon on the nightstand!
The only good blue grass is the pilot of the ship from Silverhawks.

I have been waiting for nerd meets bluegrass. Thanks Nerdist!
I just need to say how rock hard awesome it is that banjos exist, and there are actually a large group of people who love them. This is just…wow.
Maybe they’ll be the next Avett Brothers. (and if any of you haven’t heard them, please do)
These kids are awesome!
@Scott: Here’s a third rebuttal to the claim that ukuleles are only used for crap music: http://youtu.be/qadUoaWkRW8
@Kelly – The Millennium Falcon on the night stand keeps him safe from the fox.
PS. I love the Millennium Falcon on the night stand.

Um. The only possible answer to your assault on Ukelele’s is:

Does Jonah believe it’s possible to make worthwhile music with a ukulele? I currently live in Hawaii, and loathe Hawaiian music, and have never heard anyone use a ukulele for anything but crap, and to make lifeless covers of mainstream music. The banjo can make some pretty crappy music, too, but it sometimes gets a chance to stretch out and be interesting.
I’d have nightmares of being torn to shreds by foxes in that room.
