Dick Van Dyke Joins the Cast of MARY POPPINS RETURNS

Dick Van Dyke Joins the Cast of MARY POPPINS RETURNS

Way back in 1964, Dick Van Dyke co-starred in Disney’s Mary Poppins alongside Julie Andrews as the title character. Now, a mere 52 years after the original film, Van Dyke has confirmed his appearance in the upcoming sequel, Mary Poppins Returns!

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news in its profile on Van Dyke, who told them that “this one supposedly takes place 20 years later and the kids are all grown up…It’s a great cast — Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury and that guy [Lin-Manuel Miranda] from Hamilton.”

In the first film, Van Dyke portrayed Burt, a chimney sweep and occasional musical partner to Andrew’s Mary. But because the sequel only takes place 20 years after the original film, then it seems unlikely that Van Dyke will reprise his iconic role. In fact, it’s not clear how big of a part that Van Dyke will actually have in the sequel, since he didn’t specify whether it would be a cameo or something more substantial. Considering how active Van Dyke is even at 91 years old, it would be a shame if he didn’t get a chance to sing in the sequel. Hopefully Andrews will also make an appearance in the film,

Emily Blunt is taking over the title role in Mary Poppins Returns, which will be drawing from  P.L. Travers’ seven follow-up novels about Mary’s adventures. In the film, Mary will reunite with Jane and Michael Banks, as she helps them rediscover the magic she brought into their lives two decades before. Disney will release Mary Poppins Returns on December 25, 2018.
